Military Women of DistinctionAt its 22nd Annual Banquet in Madison on May 21, 2009, Wisconsin Women in Government (WWIG) honored the first-ever Military Women of Distinction. Following are short biographies of each of the honorees. Brigadier General Marcia Anderson, Verona – Army Reserve
Anderson began service in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1979. In April 2007, Anderson became the first women from Wisconsin - and the second African American woman ever - to be promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army Reserve. Currently she has command of Regional Support Group-West, located in Arlington Heights, IL. She has commanded at the Brigade, Battalion and Company levels, as well as holding various senior operations and training positions in Army Reserve units in New Jersey, Wisconsin and Kansas. Anderson serves on the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs and is a lifetime member of the National Association of Black Veterans, the Reserve Officers Association, a board member of the Center for Veteran’s Issues, and a member of the Association of the United States Army.
Colonel Ellen Healey, Fitchburg – Marines, Retired
Healey retired with 28 years of active service. She was one of the first woman officers to complete mixed gender tactical training. She has served in the US, Japan, Norway, South Korea and Benin, Africa. She was the Chief Legal Council for the Eastern Region of the US and then the Staff Judge Advocate (Chief Legal Advisor) for 5 major commands – Logistics Base Albany, GA; Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune, 1st Marine Division Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point; and 2d Marine Expeditionary Force. Healey also served as Judge on the Navy Marine Corps Military Court of Review.
Colonel Nancy Kaczor, Franklin – Air Force, Retired
Kaczor was on active duty in the U.S. Air Force from 1980 through 2007. Her last command position was at Ali Al Salem Airbase in Kuwait – 39 miles from the Iraqi border. The base provides combat rescue, theater airlift, aeromedical evacuation, air surveillance and control, theater ballistic missile defense, force protection, and combat support for coalition air, ground and other operations. As the Mission Support Group Commander, Kaczor was in charge of approximately 1000 troops serving in Kuwait and Iraq. After retiring, Kaczor became active in Greenfield High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC program as the Senior Aerospace Instructor, where she works with 80 students. She is also active in the American Legion, Am Vets and Air Force Officer Program.
Commander Lisa Kromanaker, Madison – Navy Reserve
Kromanaker enlisted in the Navy in 1987 and graduated from the Hospital Corps School in the top of her class. In 1991, she received her commission as an Ensign in the US Navy Nurse Corps. From October 2006 to November 2007, she was deployed to Landstuhl, Germany, serving as the clinical charge and staff nurse on three medical-surgical wards at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the primary hospital that receives combat casualties directly from Iraq and Afghanistan. She has also mentored junior hospital corpsmen that are considering nursing as a career and spent countless hours advising them on nursing education programs.
Lieutenant Colonel Joane Mathews, Sun Prairie – Army National Guard
With 22 years of service in the Army and Army National Guard, Mathews is currently assigned as the Deputy Director of Personnel for the State of Wisconsin Army National Guard and holds the distinction of being the first female soldier in the history of the Wisconsin Army National Guard to command the 1st of the 147th Aviation Battalion. She is also the highest ranking Native American female in the entire United Stated Army National Guard. Mathews also serves on the Wisconsin Army National Guard Diversity Council and is the Executive Director of the Wisconsin National Guard Youth Camp.
Captain Gay Leigh Mundy, Wauwatosa – Army, Retired
In 1972, Mundy was selected as the first woman Aide-de-Camp to a Commanding General in the history of the Armed Forces. Mundy also developed and implemented the first Weapons Qualifications Program for women at the HHC, WAC Company at Ft. Meyer, VA. Among her other accomplishments, she also served as an escort officer for American POWs returning from Vietnam. Outside of the military, she has volunteered at rape crisis centers, battered women shelters, veteran’s hospitals, neighborhood watch associations and civic celebration committees.
Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Seavers, Milwaukee – Air National Guard
In 2005 and 2008, Seavers was deployed to Balad Airbase, Iraq. In 2008, she led the clinical operations for one of the largest intensive care wards in Iraq. At home, she has coordinated a training program between the 128th Medical Group and the Medical College of Wisconsin. With her background in Flight for Life, pediatric nursing and emergency room nursing, she is a sought after instructor for medical personnel, both in the civilian and military communities.
Commander Tracy Wannamaker, Milwaukee – Coast Guard
Wannamaker enlisted with the U.S Coast Guard in 1982, graduating first in her Recruit Training Company. In 1982, she was the first women to serve on the Coast Guard’s National Strike Force – a highly coveted and demanding pollution response specialty team. In 1987, she became the second woman ever to graduate from the IS Navy Surface Rescue Swimmer School in Jacksonville, FL. This program has an attrition rate of over 50%. In 2004, she was chosen as the first female Commander of the Coast Guard Group in Grand Haven, MI and in 2006, she became the Chief of the Response Department at Sector Lake Michigan, overseeing the operations of 18 search and rescue units in four states, covering all of Lake Michigan.
